Talk by Brian Goodwin

Discussants: Inman Harvey, Ricard Solé, others T.B.A.

The abstract of Brian Goodwin's talk will be disclosed here shortly after the 25th of August. We can announce that the theme will deal with a reference to language and to the evidence for this in genetic regulatory networks, resulting in a reading of the genetic text that has embodied meaning in the form of the organism that emerges from the developmental process. This involves recognising a role for ambiguity, or multiple open possibilities in development, what Brian sees as the basis of developmental plasticity and adaptive response in organisms. The challenge here is to move beyond local molecular determinism to forms of 'superposition' or alternative possibilities in biological processes.
